Translation tips

Postby Tomse » Mon Jan 25, 2010 8:48 pm

Translating a piece of software can sometimes be a pain.
There might come questions where the meaning of the original language can mean different things in different contexts, there for I recommend either posting questions here, or joining us on IRC on irc.freenode.net on channel #SiT.

TIPS
Make sure your translation file is writeable by the webserver

If you are new to translating : Start with the easy ones
If you've just started translations and seem a long way to go : translate a few lines when you have 5 min and feel like it
If you've translated quite alot and want to update your translations : do a search in your browser for * this will jump to the next untranslated string.
Help texts : There are some help texts that also needs translating. Copy <sitroot>/help/en-GB folder to the xx-XX language, edit all the text files. These help texts are the popup texts that pops up when hovering above a (?).

    Save your translations often.

Until the page is paginated, I recommend using Firefox and running SiT on Linux/Unix. Windows servers can take a long time to load this page.

If you have a problem, give us enough info of what you have done, what is configured in relation to your question.
Enable debugging and post it's censored but relevant info. Don't forget to write which version of SiT you're running.
