[RESOLVED] Vmware image - no ethernet interface

Postby jami » Fri Mar 05, 2010 2:14 pm

Hello,

i'm trying to test SiT! using vmware image. However, when i load the image and login, I do not see any ethernet interfaces ( so I have no IP to connect to through web browser)
When I type sithelp :
eth0: error fetching interface information: Device not found
also, ifconfig shows me only Local Loopback interface
I tried two different computers (DL380 server and notebook) and VMware server 2.x (not sure which version exactly), VMWare WOrkstation 7.0 and VM Player with the same result.
Tried adding second ethernet interface in VMware with no success.
Can you tell me what i'm doing wrong?
Since I haven't really worked with linux, I don't know what to look at or change there...

Thanks in advance

PS: also, sorry for my english :)

what does the output say when you use enter dmesg in the console ?

or try out dmesg | grep eth

it seems like you the vmware machine didn't install a netadapter or configure it properly.

which host OS are you running ?
If you have a problem, give us enough info of what you have done, what is configured in relation to your question.
Enable debugging and post it's censored but relevant info. Don't forget to write which version of SiT you're running.

I think thats really weird
anyway, to see the IP address in that matter, type :

<code>ifconfig eth1 | grep inet</code>

in the shell.

then you'll get to see the IP address

I don't know if it is a matter with vmware 7 that changes the hardware abit.
I've tested it in the player, and server 2.0, and recived no such errors

it is atleast something that I can work on for future releases.

if you want to change your vmware so it's called eth0
you can edit a file (type the line below, replace nano with vi if you prefer that editor.
<code>sudo nano /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules<code>

delete all lines (there should be 1 or 2) starting with:
<code>SUBSYSTEM</code>

then reboot the system.

this should fix your problem

Hi JaMi.

I'm glad it's working now. It would be great to hear your of experiences trying out SiT! once you've had time to give it a try, any feedback you have, good or bad would be most welcome.

All the best,

Ivan

I think I typed in the code tags wrongly (I corrected it for future use)

I'm glad you got it to work :-)

Kind regards
Carsten
